On Wednesday, July 22, Professor Masaru Matsumoto and Assistant Professor Keita Tatsukawa of the Joint Research Course in Well-Being Nursing visited Ishikawa Prefectural Hakui High School to conduct an outreach open campus program.

Under the theme, “Exploring Well-Being Nursing Through Technology,” students learned about a new approach to nursing that integrates healthcare with advanced technology through both lectures and hands-on activities.

The lecture began by exploring the questions, “What is well-being in nursing?” and “What is nursing?” It then introduced how technologies such as AI, IoT, and telenursing can help address social challenges, including the growing shortage of nursing professionals associated with the aging population and declining birthrate, while continuing to provide person-centered care. The session also highlighted the development of assistive technologies through industry–academia collaboration and emphasized the research philosophy of “creating what does not yet exist when it is needed.”

During the practical session, students observed structures inside the body using a portable AI-assisted ultrasound device, experienced a robotic cushion, participated in pressure mapping measurements, and interacted with a nonverbal AI communication robot.

Although impressed by these innovative nursing technologies, the students listened attentively to the lecture and enthusiastically explored each of the devices. The program provided an opportunity for them to reflect on the evolving role of nursing in a society where AI and robotics continue to advance.
