An article co-authored by Lecturer Daijiro Haba of the Joint Research Course and Professor Gojiro Nakagami of the University of Tokyo, titled “Integration of Physical Therapy and Nursing Engineering in Pressure Ulcer Management,” has been published in Rigakuryoho Journal, Vol. 60, No. 6 (pp. 685–690), issued by Igaku-Shoin. In Japan, the prevalence of pressure ulcers has been kept at a low level through the steady accumulation of preventive care practices, including careful positioning and skin care provided by multidisciplinary teams. However, severe and treatment-resistant pressure ulcers can still occur for various reasons. These cases often require a prolonged healing period and carry a risk of infection, placing a considerable burden on both patients and healthcare professionals. As a result, there is growing interest in new treatment strategies that actively incorporate physical therapies such as electrical stimulation and ultrasound from an early stage to promote wound healing. In this article, Lecturer Haba, who is also a physical therapist, introduces research and development efforts that integrate physical therapy and nursing engineering, focusing on the development of next-generation care devices aimed at promoting autonomous and proactive healing of pressure ulcers through localized low-frequency vibration stimulation. The article highlights the potential of interdisciplinary innovation as a new approach to addressing challenges in clinical practice. We warmly invite you to read it.
